Salar de Uyuni (3,653m)

Salar de Uyuni (Salt Plains of Uyuni) is a UNESCO listed site and with an area of 9,000 sq km, is the biggest salt lake on earth and one of the flattest as well. A hard 7m layer of salt sits on top of several meters of salt water at the bottom of the lake.

Getting ready for our journey across the salt lake,

Souvenir items made from salt

Crossing the salt lake
It is indeed an exhilarating and surreal experience.

Protecting the engine from salt water

Harvested salt

The journey, just like the fun we were having, seemed endless!

Incahuasi Island
The island in the middle of the salt lake.
The island is ‘filled’ with many tall cacti, (more than 6,000).
It grows at 1 cm a year.

Alfresco lunch on the island in the middle of the salt lake!

Tourists sun-bathing on the salt lake!
Seemed to be having a jolly good time.

Our hotel in Uyuni (above and below)
Here, everything is made of salt – the walls, tables, chairs and even the beds.
